Bellingen Museum Opening Hours
The Bellinger Valley Historical Society & Museums are a community based non profit organisation run by volunteers. It is dedicated to preserving and displaying the Aboriginal and European history of the Bellinger Valley and surrounding areas on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales.
The Bellingen & Urunga Museums are the only places where records of the history of this interesting valley are kept and made available to the community for perusal & research.
The collection includes: documents – family history, articles & newspapers, photographs, maps, paintings, books and artefacts – some of which date from pre-European settlement, all of which we are endeavouring to preserve.
Bellingen Shire Council provides no financial support so the role of volunteers is essential. If you are interested in history and can afford to volunteer a few hours of your time each week it will be very greatly appreciated.
When we have no volunteers, we cannot even open the Museum.
We need people to: help look after the artefacts; help to change & improve displays; learn to access documents; restore old photographs on the computer…. and anything else you can see needs doing!
At the moment we have a number of research projects. They include:
- Aboriginal family history in the Bellingen shire.
- Ambulance service & early form of medicare in Bellingen.
- Timber Industry and the history of the Syndicate Track.
- The Gumbaynggir people of the Bellinger Valley.
- Early architecture and significant buildings.
- Old Photo restoration.
- The Alternative Lifestyle People of the Bellinger Valley – 1970s & 80s
If you would like to contribute to any of these or start one of your own, please come
& see us.
